There are now almost 700,000 workers across the UK who are on zero-hours contracts. It's impossible to live a good life when you have no guarantees you'll be working next week. These jobs often don't leave people feeling secure. I know that for some, especially students, these contracts are useful but they should not substitute for long-term regular work.
I'm proud that Labour will give people on zero-hours contracts the right to demand steady hours after six months.
I hear regularly from my constituents that zero-hours agency work can sometimes fall short of the standards we all expect from our work. There are too many stories of poorly paid staff suffering poor pay and conditions at work. I believe that you should be paid a living wage which lets you and your family live a good and fulfilling life. Fortunately Kirklees Council, our University of Huddersfield and other local employers pay the living wage, but we must ensure that nobody falls through the cracks — 1 in 5 people nationally .
That's why I'm proud that Labour will raise the minimum wage.
I am calling for decent jobs with decent conditions, and decent, regular contracted hours. Will you join me?
