I am proud to support the Clean Air Everywhere campaign by Friends of the Earth and urge many to be aware of the damage air pollution can have on our environment.
The effects diesel cars have on our air quality is something I have raised before in the House of Commons explaining the need for a scrappage scheme to remove these cars and buses from our towns and cities. Dirty air can have a very serious detrimental effect on a person’s health and a further subsequent effect on our healthcare and economy. According to statistics provided by Friends of the Earth, each year air pollution causes 40,000 early deaths and stunts the development of children’s lungs.
I have written to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to ask what is being done to put an end to rising levels of air pollution and will continue to raise this issue in the House.
I will continue to pressure the government to ensure effective action to clean up our illegally polluted air and phase out dirty diesel vehicles.
